Alvah tells his mother that his ankle is doing better so he was cleared to take a thirty-day furlough. However, he will only accept it if he is paid for the four months of work he is owed. Alvah also notes that other soldiers are reenlisting but he vows to leave the army when his term is up, so that he may return home to take care of her.
