Alvah's doctor told him that the bullet wound to his ankle will likely cause it to be stiff for the rest of his life. Alvah then writes to his sister Sarah and tells her that he is glad a man named Green has broken off contact with her, for he would only sully her reputation. Apparently, Sarah had earlier justified her relation with Green by saying he acted similarly to her brothers.
