(Note: this letter is initialed as both T.W. and T.H. but it seems more likely that T.W. wrote this because a March 27th letter delivered to Bagley from Petersburg is clearly initialed T.W. in similar handwriting) Brownell heard that Union General William Tecumseh Sherman has overtaken General Jubal Early's Confederate forces. Brownell observes that Confederate soldiers seem to be deserting at an increased rate although the Richmond newspapers remain optimistic.
