Diantha notifies Edward that their parents have been sick with colds. She also notes that Octavia (relation unknown) is once again living with them so she can work as a teacher. Diantha proceeds to update Edward about a number of family and friends. Edward's mother, Mary Payne (maiden name Russell), expresses a lot of concerns for her son. She hopes for a speedy end to the fighting, a mild winter, and good health for Edward. (Mary Russell married Arnold Payne after the death of her first husband, Samuel Dickerman, who fathered all of her children).
