Diantha has heard that James' regiment is expected to return home before heading to Missouri. She hopes Octavia will stick around for another nine months to teach and she gives an update on the status of the crops. Edward's mother, Mary, inquires about the warmth and cleanliness of his clothes, the quality of his diet, and his finances. She closes by reminding Edward to remain obedient to his commanding officers so that he may die an honorable death in battle, if that is how he must go.
