In Carlos' handwriting, he and Annie write to Joseph and Sarah to tell them about a dramatic court case in Saginaw. A black woman was sentenced to three years in prison on a manslaughter charge for killing an intruder. According to the Hayes' account, which relies heavily on racial and ethnic stereotypes, a drunken Irish man refused to leave the woman's house so she killed him by inflicting eleven blows to the head with a hammer. Though the letter was technically from both Carlos and Annie Hayes (Carlos signed for Annie), it is impossible to determine whose opinion this letter actually reflects. Taken at face value, the Hayes seem concerned about the children of those involved and they believe justice was carried out reasonably for the woman, but not for the deceased.
