John expresses sympathy for his brother, who experienced crop failures on his new farm. He then reminds his brother to consider purchasing land in the near future, since the war will likely cause land prices to decrease. John then states that laborers are hard to come by in Peoria but he does not want to give in to pressures to enlist in the army until he can return home to see his family.
