Alexander mentions that his regiment is always busy and on the move. He acknowledges that the Corps of Engineers provides a relatively good job in the army because they do not have picket duty, they do not have to carry their knapsacks, they have good rations and clothing, and they are well-paid. Nonetheless, he still adamantly opposes his brother James' wishes to enlist in the 8th Michigan Infantry Regiment.
