Davis writes to his wife about their newborn daughter and describes his pride at the thought of being a father. He thinks they should wait to name the baby to make sure that it lives. His regiment is still located in Grand Junction, and Davis is feeling discouraged about the war and how many people are suffering, though he is trying to remain patriotic. He reports on the health of his friends from home, requests that his wife send him a dollar's worth of stamps, and will send some cotton in his next letter.
