Davis has not heard from his wife since the beginning of December, but is looking for a letter from her in the mail. His regiment has moved to Memphis and he is impressed by its size and business sector. He writes about General Sherman's attempt at Vicksburg and describes the snowy weather that his regiment is encountering. His regiment is currently doing guard duty on the railroad in Memphis, and though they recently received two months' pay, some men are dissatisfied. Davis continues his letter January 16 after it has stopped snowing and informs his wife that his regiment is going to Vicksburg, though he knows little about what he will do there. Davis had his picture taken and is sending it in his letter along with ten dollars.
