Davis's regiment completed their journey down the river and are only seven or eight miles upriver from Vicksburg. Davis doesn't think there will be much of a battle at Vicksburg any time soon, but knows that Union forces are working on a canal that would take them past Vicksburg and out of range of Confederate artillery. Fosters Battery arrived the previous day from Vicksburg carrying some friends of Davises. Davis is including flower blossoms in his letter to his wife so that she can see the kind of flowers that bloom in January.
