Davis is still able to hear cannon fire from Confederate forces attempting to break the Union blockade at Vicksburg. He anticipates they will move again soon but is not sure where they will be sent. Some men say Arkansas while others say Tennessee, but Davis thinks Tennessee is more likely. He has taken up whittling rings and is sending one made out of black horn to his wife. He does not want her to bother with sending him money this time, saying that he can borrow what he needs and that he has plenty of stamps.
