Davis is happy to hear that the ring he sent his wife several weeks ago arrived intact and the money that he sent in the mail was also received. Davis is anxious about the money that he loaned to a man named Baker being repayed in individual bank notes instead of government notes and instructs his wife to only accept government notes. Union forces have broken the Confederate blockade at Vicksburg and captured about 15,000 troops near Carthage. Davis wants to be furloughed home but he would prefer the war be over before he is furloughed so he doesn't need to come back. His regiment has received marching orders to go to Richmond tomorrow as provost guards.
