In this letter, Thomas writes that his army guarded some prisoners towards Jackson and will likely pass the remaining prisoners tomorrow. Davis describes Vicksburg, MS as badly torn to pieces, soldiers and citizens had to live in holes in the ground for protection from artillery and rifle fire. Thomas discusses events surrounding the death of James Ditto.
