In this letter to his wife, Thomas writes that he is still doing guard and fatigue duty such as repairing forts and loading provisions for troops at Jackson, MS. Thomas reports that General Joe Johnston has possession of Jackson, MS and Grant's Army has him surrounded. Davis describes several men going home on furloughs and that he hasn't decided if he will come home this fall or wait until the war ends.
