Davis writes Lucinda informing her that he is in good health and was able to walk the 78 miles from Chattanooga to Kingston without a load. He notes that they are now 30 miles from General Sherman's Army and that he has heard rumors that the army has crossed the Chattahoochee River, although there has been no confirmation. Davis details that on their march from Chattanooga the Cavalry captured 30 guerrilla soldiers who will likely be hanged, and 14 horses. He notes that the 18th Regiment is also in Kingston and that no one is sure how long they will stay here. Davis writes that he is waiting to hear the army has possession of Atlanta before preparing to leave on furlough.
