Davis writes to Lucinda informing her that he is currently in the hospital in Kinston, North Carolina due to his Rheumatism. He notes that he was not able to march with the Regiment toward Goldsboro, although due to his better health he will likely leave to rejoin them within several days. Davis writes that the Union forces from New Bern are joining General Sherman's Army at Goldsboro and that Colonel Jackson has arrived from New York in order to assist. Davis concludes by detailing the condition of the town and its inhabitants.
