Davis writes to Lucinda noting that he is in good health. He details that General Sherman has been with Confederate General Johnston for several days and that there is talk that the Rebels will be surrendering all forces east of Mississippi, therefore concluding the fighting. Davis notes that they can see the end of the war, however now they must be patient. He continues by detailing that while he is still in Raleigh he has seen many of Confederate General Lee's soldiers that surrendered in Richmond, and notes that they all seem content with no longer fighting. Davis writes that they received news that President Lincoln was shot within the same hour that Secretary Sewards was stabbed, although he details they are unsure of whether the news is accurate seeing as it could be a Rebel interception. Davis concludes by noting that he has made some money selling newspapers.
