This document records Edwin R. Havens' promotion to Second Lieutenant in the Sevent Regiment of the Michigan Cavalry, roughly six months before his promotion to First Lieutenant. The writing on the back of the commission is very faint, but it reads roughly, "Office Asst Con. ... Ft. Leavenworth Kansas, June 23, 1865, I hereby certify that I have this day mustered (?) the ... named Edwin R. Havens as 2nd Lieutenant in accordance with the written Commission to ... as such from the 14th of June 1865"
