A letter from A. E. Ferdon to his sister Mary. Ferdon tells Mary that he is suffering from "rheumatism" due to marching and sleeping outdoors in the rain. Ferdon goes on to discuss the difficulties in getting fresh food, and delays in mail delivery due to the pursuit of Confederate forces out of Kentucky and into Tennessee. Ferdon speculates that a clash is likely near Murfreesboro, but that he is not likely to fight due to his rheumatism. Ferdon finishes the letter by telling his sister to eat all of the food that he can't get at the front, and to think of him.
