James writes Emma that he is angry at his father for demanding possessions that belonged to his mother. Before she died, James' mother gave some of her belongings, including a silver tea spoon set, to E.J. (Emma Jane, James' biological sister). James' father complained that his mother "had no business" giving away her things, even though she bought the silver spoons with her own money. James goes on to ask for a pair of boots with reinforced heels and soles. He then mentions that he is staying in the courthouse and just returned from a swim in the Cumberland River.
