Parkhurst writes to his sisters on the second anniversary of Amelia's death to inform them that he plans to marry Josephine Reeves as soon as possible. He asks them to support his decision even though Josephine is much younger and his sisters were so fond of Amelia and a different Josephine (from New York), the latter of which seemed to be a potential marriage partner. Parkhurst emphasizes that he believes Josephine will be a great mother to his two young children, who were in the care of his sisters at this time.
