Eliza Kedzie writes to her cousin James mainly to update him on their family affairs. She discusses the state of her health, that of her sisters, as well as her mother, and she notes that a young woman in the community recently died of consumption. She mentions Lincoln's inauguration (probably in reference to his First Annual Address to Congress on December 1, 1861) and her correspondence with a lawyer in Kentucky who predicted the state would secede by May 1st. Near the end of the letter, Kedzie states her intention to travel west to visit family and friends.
