James Lickly writes to his brother William, describing his journey from Nashville to Decatur, Alabama, as well as the landscape of the surrounding area. Lickly notes that while Decatur might have been a good town before the war, it now stands in ruins. He further describes in detail the Tennessee River and notes that the boys are now on picket duty and working to build fortifications. Lickly writes that the 18th Michigan Regiment will soon go scouting and look for "wild" Rebels. Lickly also notes that he saw Morris before leaving Nashville, but details that he was looking unwell. Lickly writes that he suspects Morris has smallpox, and that Morris said he would be heading home soon. Lickly concludes by questioning whether William has heard or seen Morris recently.
