Benjamin is now in Tennessee near Cumberland Gap, following Union General Ambrose Burnside's seizure of the location from Confederate forces. He tells his mother to contact Will Shaw's parents and tell them not to direct their letters to the regiment and company because Will is in a hospital somewhere and all Benjamin can do is hold onto their letters until he finds out Will's exact location.
