Benjamin begins by describing their trial and error method for baking cakes and bread. He says their superiors made it clear that anyone found guilty of taking provisions from the locals would be dishonorably discharged. His regiment, then, was ordered to begin constructing winter quarters in a nearby wooded area. Benjamin goes on to detail their winter dwellings and notes that he is bunk mates with DeWitt Spaulding once again. He closes by asking his mother to send him a package containing dried fruit.
