DeWitt describes his awe in seeing the grand review of the Army of the Potomac combined with Gen. Sherman's troops. He notes that a contingent of African Americans (who were laborers not soldiers) brought up the rear, riding on mules and carrying sundry supplies. DeWitt states that he is in the running to assume the role of orderly officer.
