Benjamin is camped twenty-four miles northwest of Washington, D.C., near a spring in which the men bathe fully clothed. He tells his mother he believes his unit will be sent to Harper's Ferry. Benjamin goes on to name the mutual acquaintances and friends with whom he is stationed. Lastly, he lists off the equipment he must carry.
