Gershom writes to Sarah (his sister) about the springtime weather and a frost that destroyed many of their crops. He then asks if her husband Edmond can bring a worker to help him around July 4. He closes by asking Sarah to send him a "receipt" for making an "egg cake" and "soft cake."
