Mattoon Letter : August 4, 1863

Gershom notes that his facial wound is worse than he originally thought, because he had to have fragments of something removed (Note: in a subsequent letter, he clarifies that the fragments were bone). He goes on to describe the wounds of two other soldiers, one of whom was a captain in their regiment.
