Gooding describes the pervasiveness of illness around him in Nashville, and his pessimism about surviving the war. He then explains their method of obtaining food: confiscating animals, crops, and foodstuffs from nearby plantations. Gooding notes that two women, one being the wife of the Captain, accompany their unit. He thanks Lucy for sending letters and newspapers to him.
