Gooding goes into detail about the heaviest combat he had yet experienced at the Battle of Noonday Creek. He describes seeing a man next to him shot through the head and being within thirty feet of his Confederate opponents. He makes the seemingly half-serious suggestion that Lucy find another man for he does not think he will survive more fighting such as this.
