Gooding describes more of the fighting at the Battle of Noonday Creek. He notes that Lucy's cousin Frank is rather sick. Gooding also mentions little details about camp life: stale bread, gross bacon, and doing laundry. He asks about the health of Lucy's father and how "Abe and Andy" are doing in Michigan, although he makes it clear he is a supporter of neither President Lincoln nor Vice President Johnson.
