Fred feels weak from a recent illness and has trouble with the physical tasks assigned to him. He discusses his expenses (mainly for food) and explains that he generates some income by fixing watches. Fred notes that he picked a bouquet of flowers to place in their shanty to make it more appealing. He also mentions that a former first lieutenant in their unit was shot dead trying to break into a "negro shanty."
