Fred describes how his stomach became upset while marching in a parade for the anniversary of the attack on Fort Sumter. He notes that he has been in terrible pain since then, but his diarrhea has lessened considerably. Fred also mentions bathing and laundering his clothes in a nearby river. Finally, he remarks that there is a rumor going around camp that Abraham Lincoln and his secretary of state, William Seward, are dead. (Note: there was an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Seward the same night Lincoln was shot).
