This is a letter from Webster Teachout, a Union soldier, to his father. Teachout relays several rumors from camp about when the war will end and when he will be allowed to return home. Another rumor is being spread around Teachout's hometown that he and a friend of his, Willey Bond, have "the clap." Teachout assures his father that this is not true, and that he will "thrash" the liar who created the rumor.
