This is a letter from Webster Teachout, a Union soldier, to his father. Webster goes into detail about a raid he went on in which he killed many enemy soldiers, ran out of food, but had fun. He also talks about his fellow soldiers, friends he's made, and his new job as a deliverer of orders.
