U.S. President Barack Obama speaks on withdrawing troops from Afghanistan
President Barack Obama speaks to the nation about reducing the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan. He says that the U.S. strategy of targeting al-Qaeda leaders and promoting counter insurgency to defeat the Taliban has been successful and that 10,000 troops to can be withdrawn in 2011 and 23,000 more by the end of summer 2012. Obama also declares America's commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law and says that the U.S. must play a role in world affairs and can not simply retreat to its shores.
